How to Size a Chandelier for Any Room

A chandelier is often the single most impactful fixture in a home — which is exactly why getting the size wrong is so noticeable. The good news is there's a simple, reliable formula.

The diameter rule

Add the length and width of your room in feet, and that sum in inches is a good chandelier diameter. A 14 × 16 ft living room suits a chandelier of roughly 30 inches across. For a fixture over a dining table, size to the table instead — about half to two-thirds the table's width.

The height rule

For ceiling height, allow about 2.5–3 inches of chandelier height per foot of ceiling. In a room with a 10 ft ceiling, a fixture 25–30 inches tall feels balanced. Over a dining table, hang the bottom about 30–36 inches above the tabletop.
